When they first formed, the X-Men initially met in the ESU student union and practiced on the quad. Since Angel and Beast were publicly known to attend the college, this was just seen as a local curiosity by the rest of the student body. Even so, the team was wary of causing damage to the campus. Furthermore, Beast and Cyclops were both concerned about security for the latter’s growing case files, particularly the material they did not already share with the Fantastic Four and Avengers through scientific forums.
Naturally, it was Warren Worthington III/the Angel who came up with the solution. He found a warehouse, once used by FEMA following Hurricane Sandy, that was owned but then unused by Worthington Industries, and through his father arranged for it to be listed as a "special renovation project" through the discretionary budget. This warehouse is located in the Turtle Bay industrial remnants in the East 30s (between East 33rd and East 36th Streets) between 1st Avenue and FDR Drive. Only the top half of the warehouse is above ground; because it is built into the slope toward the East River, the interior extends farther underground than the exterior suggests. Initially constructed from brick with interior reinforcement, the warehouse has only three entrances to the streets: a double-width garage door, a tractor-trailer loading bay door, and a normal door beside the loading bay. The only real indication from the ground or air that it is more than it appears is the Worthington Industries "maintenance zone" logo where the rooftop opens to allow the X-Copter’s landing pad to rise. There is also a roof access stairwell near the "maintenance zone." At some point, the team began to refer to the place as the X-Warehouse, and the name has stuck. Because he is a reserve member, Spider-Man has also begun hanging around the X-Warehouse, causing Iceman to joke "this is becoming the Spider-X Warehouse". The revised name has not yet become common.
The bulk of the X-Warehouse is divided into two sections which cover not only the ground floor but the first below-ground floor as well. The first section is "the garage." This is where the X-Van and X-Copter are stored, with a hydraulic lift to permit the X-Copter’s landing pad to rise to the roof access. Cyclops’s motorcycle is also often stored here.
The second and largest section of the X-Warehouse is the training area. Beast has done his best to replicate the Xavier Institute’s Danger Room, using paintball guns and ping-pong ball launchers as well as various swinging hazards suspended from the roof. The training area also includes a gymnasium with free weights (currently rated up to 1,000 lbs.), a number of yoga and martial arts mats, two treadmills, two punching bags, a trio of boxing speed bags, and a weight machine donated by the Fantastic Four rated up to 100 tons.
In addition, the above-ground portion of the X-Warehouse has two other main areas of note. The first is the rec room, a space for the X-Men and their friends and allies who know of it to rest, relax, study, and basically be the college students they are. It has a large television on one wall, with a wide selection of game consoles and games, from a refurbished original NES to the latest Xbox and PlayStation, connected to it. The furniture is an eclectic selection of couches, chairs, coffee tables, and end tables – and one beanbag chair – purchased from a number of thrift stores. A card table with two chairs sits near the window. A kitchenette in one corner consists of a sink, a small countertop, a full-size refrigerator, a full-size freezer, two microwave ovens, a large toaster oven, and a two-burner range, along with cabinets storing plastic plates, plastic cups, and a silverware drawer. A small pantry off the kitchenette has a number of canned goods with a handful of mismatched pots and pans hanging on the wall.
The second above-ground room of note is an office, usually used by Cyclops or Angel. This office has a desk with a dual-monitor desktop setup (the rec room television doubles as a third computer for video games), two filing cabinets, a whiteboard detailing their most recent adventures, and two cork bulletin boards on the walls. The office has a Plexiglas wall overlooking the training area.
A mezzanine level contains several storage rooms, one of which has been claimed by Beast as his "workshop," and another as a chem lab. The others have learned not to let anyone except Beast and Spider-Man into the chem lab. The storage rooms include an over-and-under washing machine and dryer combination for their uniforms and other clothes, first-aid kits, spare parts, and whatever the others decide they need to "save" from their cases.
The X-Warehouse’s sub-basement level originated as an old Con-Edison tunnel. This is a narrow brick-lined former sewer with old cables and rusted conduits on the walls. Beast has installed motion sensors, humidity monitors, and a few cameras in the main section. An alcove includes a backup generator for electricity, emergency lights, and other emergency supplies.
A trapdoor on the floor of the sub-basement leads to the Morlock tunnels. While this has caused issues with the Morlocks in the past, the access to the tunnels proved strategically crucial during the Zodiac Cartel’s recent attack on the island.
