History: Scattered across the world are those of a mystical draconic lineage, classified by those in the know as "protector dragons". These dragons for centuries have organized as the Order of the Dragon, led by a council of five of the oldest and wisest of protector dragons, the Dragon Council. (It is not known what connection exists, if any, between the draconic Order of Dragon and the historical European Order of the Dragon, which counted Vlad II Dracul of Wallachia, the father of Vlad III Dracula, as a member). Unlike "true" dragons (such as the Central Park Dragon), protector dragons are generally born in a human form and grow into their draconic heritage as they reach puberty (or in some cases earlier). Protector dragons under the Order of the Dragon are protectors of magical creatures, defending beings such as unicorns, leprechauns, brownies, faeries, and others from those who would capture, enslave, kill, or otherwise harm them, while also protecting the mundane world from more malicious magical creatures like gremlins and vampires. Many of these magical creatures are descended from deific and mythic realms including but not limited to the Asgardian Nine Worlds, Avalon, Mount Olympus, and K'un-Lun, as well as those native to the Earth dimension.

Jake Long was born into this protector dragon lineage, the grandson of one of the greatest living protector dragons, Luong Lao-Shi, who in his own youth had defeated the only protector dragon to turn from protecting to attempting to rule. At first, Jake was unaware that he had been born into the lineage, as his mother reportedly never exhibited draconic traits and his father was pure human. Jake was nine years old when he first accidentally breathed fire while at a summer camp, but his full dragon form and powers didn't manifest until he was thirteen, at which point his grandfather and mother, Susan, revealed that Jake and his sister Haley were protector dragons. (Susan claimed that the dragon power skipped her.) As the protector dragon of New York City and its surrounding area, Jake trained under Lao-Shi with the aid of a 600+ year old magical talking Shar Pei named Fu Dog, being named by the Dragon Council as the American Dragon. (Despite past reports, Jake is not the first American Dragon. Furthermore, while Jake officially has the entire United States as his jurisdiction, he is functionally restricted to the Northeast Atlantic region, roughly from Philadelphia in the south to the St. Lawrence River in the north to the Niagara Falls and Pittsburgh in the west. His maternal cousin Greg has been named the Florida Dragon, covering much of the Southeast United States.)

As the American Dragon, Jake found himself in conflict with various enemies including goblins, sewer trolls, the self-proclaimed evil sorcerer Eli Pandarus, and the Dark Dragon, the most powerful protector dragon who had years before turned from protecting to ruling. However, his most persistent enemies were the Huntmaster, the head of the Huntsclan, an international organization who hunted magical creatures for sport, and the Huntmaster's protege Huntsgirl. He also bucked tradition by refusing to use an alchemical potion (cooked up by Fu Dog) to wipe the memories of his two closest friends, Trixie and Spud, when they learned his secret; this came in handy later as they got involved in Jake's adventures.

Jake also became romantically involved with his classmate Rose Hunt, who unknown to Jake (at the time) was Huntsgirl. However, just as Jake was preparing to let Rose in on his secret, during a class ski trip to the Adirondacks of upstate New York, he learned she was Huntsgirl, leaving him heartbroken. A subsequent encounter had Rose learning Jake's secret, which eventually led to her questioning and then turning against the Huntsclan.

Rose eventually used wish magic, powered by a bunch of mystic Aztec crystal skulls, to eliminate who she thought was the entirety of the Huntsclan; it has since been revealed that she only eliminated the New York cell. To save Rose's life, Jake used the same wish magic to wish that Rose had never been inducted into the Huntsclan. It was later explained by Dr. Stephen Strange, the current Sorcerer Supreme, that wish magic cannot change the past, only the present; the magic adjusted the memories of Rose, her rediscovered family (the Harpers), and most of their classmates, while rearranging the evidence to match those memories.

During a subsequent, presumably final, conflict with the Dark Dragon in Hong Kong, Jake ensured that Rose regained her memories, leading to Rose being instrumental in the Dark Dragon's defeat and thousand year banishment.

Since then, Jake has continued to act as the protector of magical creatures in and around New York alongside his friends. Complicating matters is the resurgence of the Huntsclan with a new, far more brutal Huntmaster in charge, as well as the revelation that Lao-Shi has contracted lung cancer and that Susan Long had herself once been the American Dragon before giving up the dragon power to save her husband.

Most recently, the American Dragon came to public attention as one of the heroes who assisted in protecting New York City when the Zodiac Cartel raised an energy dome over Manhattan, to his grandfather's dismay. The mundane public, however, has enthusiastically embraced the American Dragon as a hometown hero.
Age: 16.
Height: 5' 6" (human form); 7' 2" (dragon form).
Weight: 155 lbs. (human form); 320 lbs. (dragon form).
Eyes: Brown.
Hair: Black with green highlights (from hair gel).
Skin: Red with gold chest markings (in dragon form).
Other Distinguishing Features: When in full dragon form, possesses a long snout, sharp claws on his hands and feet, a long tail, wings coming from his shoulder blades, and a green dorsal ridge running from the back of his neck to his tail.
Uniform: None.
Strength Level: When transformed into a dragon or channeling "strength of the dragon" in his human form, the American Dragon possesses superhuman strength enabling him to dead-lift roughly 10 tons. As he is still a juvenile dragon, it is very likely he'll grow stronger with time. Even in human form, he is stronger than most people of his age, height, and build, albeit not superhumanly so, being only twice as strong as an average person of his age, height, and build who engages in regular exercise, equivalent to a person of said age, height, and build who engages in intensive regular exercise.
Known Superhuman Powers: As a protector dragon, Jake Long possesses the magical ability to transform himself into a dragon, which grants him superhuman strength and durability, enhanced senses of sight and hearing, sharp teeth, sharp claws, increased agility, the ability to fly, and the ability to breathe fire (allegedly from both ends). Even in his human form, he is able to selectively change his shape to take on various aspects of his dragon form, such as his snout, eyes, claws, wings, and tail. He is able to breathe balls and jets of fire at will in both human and dragon forms.

In flight, Jake has been clocked at a maximum of 180 miles per hour. His usual "cruising" speed in flight is around 60 mph. When channeling the "Wings of the Dragon" in human form, he is only able to fly at a maximum of 30 mph without a load.
Other Abilities: Even in his human form, Jake is a skilled skateboarder, breakdancer, and all-around athlete. He is also multilingual, able to speak, read, and write in English, Mandarin Chinese, and Cantonese Chinese.
